Royal Navy Field Gun

Elutec Academy students have taken part in this prestigious event at HMS Collingwood for the past three years.
Each crew of highly disciplined, motivated and physically fit Field Gunners race to assemble an antique field gun and run with it, disassembling and re-assembling as the competition requires, before dramatically dragging the gun home, maintaining the spirit of the Royal Navy’s contribution to the Siege of Ladysmith.

Elutec Academy students spend 4 days training and preparing for a competition against other UTC’s, colleges and Royal Navy apprentices. Field Gun incorporates elements of naval ethos and is designed to build the camaraderie and team spirit of future leaders. In 2017, Elutec Academy were placed 1st out of the 9 UTC’s participating, and 5th out of all 18 teams that participated.

All Sixth Form students have the opportunity to apply to be a Field Gun team member for this unique event and it is evident that the returning team, without exception, always wish to attend again in year 2 as the whole experience is one of determination, physical challenge, discipline and teamwork. The Field Gun competition is an extraordinary competition. Elutec Academy are proud of the relationship we have built with the Royal Navy.
